Meet Darrell Malone

At a height of six feet three inches, Darrell Malone was meant to play basketball. He is a relentless competitor and was a significant four year contributor to his high school basketball team. On the court, it was easy to recognize his passion for the game. And off the court, his relentlessness and thoughtfulness shine even brighter.

Southern Reflections

Born in Illinois, Darrell moved to the Tennessee-Mississippi region early in life and was raised almost single handedly by his mother, Angela, an account sales manager. As a young man, Darrell was extremely introspective and enjoyed living near a lake that afforded him a quiet place to think. These times allowed him to reflect on the sacrifices of his family, and cultivated in him a determination to never give up on himself or those around him.

The Grindstone

Darrell’s best attribute is his willingness to work hard. Besides competing on the basketball team, Darrell worked after school at Walgreens, even while pulling top marks in his classes. Darrell’s relentless effort gained notice, as well as his abilities as a valuable team member and a leader. It was those qualities that earned Darrell a full-ride Act Six scholarship to Crichton College, where he is a freshman today.

More Than an Athlete

Speaking to Darrell, you quickly discover a young man who is eager to learn about others. His involvement as a member of Act Six has highlighted his desire to be a learner and leader of his community. “Act Six has made me grow, view the world differently, and want to give back to the community.” He is already making good on that desire by serving urban youth through Memphis Athletic Ministries.

Darrell is a student of business administration and has distinguished himself at Crichton by taking on campus diversity issues. “I want to make a positive impact on people.” To accomplish that goal, Darrell will rely on an approach he first learned on the basketball court: applying strength to strategy. With the help of Act Six, Darrell Malone is stretching himself to benefit his community for life.
