First Act Six Scholars Graduate from Whitworth
Defying national statistics, 100% of the 11 scholars from the first Act Six cadre, along with one scholar from the second cadre, graduated May 20 from Whitworth College with a record of distinguished leadership, service and academic achievement.
“Our scholars are having a profound impact through their leadership on campus, and as they begin to graduate we look forward to their impact in the community,” says Tim Herron, founder and national director of Act Six.
Act Six scholars have enriched Whitworth’s campus with their perspectives, involvement and leadership. Cadre One scholar Fa’ana Fanene was elected president of the Associated Students of Whitworth College for 2006-07. Other scholars have been student ambassadors for the admissions office, officers in a variety of student organizations, resident assistants and research collaborators with faculty.
In the face of national five-year graduation rates that hover below 50% for many ethnic minority groups, all 12 of these ethnically diverse Act six scholars will have graduated within four years. Most come from low-income families and will be the first in their families to earn a college degree.
